Van Nationals 2023 – 50th Anniversary

After a year hiatus I finally found myself at my second Van Nationals, this one being the couldn’t miss 50th anniversary celebration in Sterling, Co.

For those who aren’t familiar Van Nationals is a “truck-in” which is an organized van gathering / campout. It differs from a car show in that it’s not open to the general public, you must ride in a van to get in, this lends a much more intimate experience as we make friends and camp together for a long weekend all drawn together by our passion for these machines and the culture that surrounds them.

This year’s Nats did not disappoint as over 700 vans pulled up. There were several previous best-in-show winners as well as the winner of the top prize at the first Nats held 50 years prior.

Good times, old friends, killer vans and everybody was both weird and friendly, which are decidedly two of my favorite traits in folks.

Here are some of my photos from the event, hope you dig them.

Van Nationals 2021

This July I had the absolute pleasure of attending the 48th National Truck-In at Albert Lea, Minnesota.

I’ve been looking forward to this for two years, and I have to say that it completely exceeded all of my expectations. The people were amazing and kind, I talked to folx from all walks of life who I would never meet except for a shared passion for vanning. The vans themselves were amazing and provided so many ideas for paint and interior in my own project. Of course it was the 4×4 vans that captivated me most. I can’t wait for next year’s Truck-In in Ohio and hopefully the debut of my own custom van.

Here are some of my photos from the event, hope you dig them.

Polar Devils Ice Drags

This past weekend a local group of protagonists that go by “Polar Devils” hosted some ice drags for pre 1954 autos and motorcycles out on McMahon Lake in the suburban expanse surrounding the Twin Cities.

Naturally, excited about anything happening during this Winter of Covid we headed out to take in an absolutely stunning day and check out all the rad machines. Unfortunately by the time we arrived the police had managed to shut it down, apparently they were concerned with a permit, which they had, and then came back asking for insurance, which they had, and finally broke it up due to covid restrictions. Friggin’ fun police.

Big thanks to the Polar Devils for organizing and putting in the hard work to make things like this happen, hopefully we’ll catch ya’ll next time.

Chariots of the Gods 2019

Minneapolis’ premier van and camper get-together continues to grow and bring more and more folks into the community.

There are few better ways to spend a hot August afternoon and evening then partying with a few hundred of your closest friends. This year we joined the fray and vended and showed off our own van, a 1985 Volkswagen Vanagon, that I have owned for ten years and have put countless hours into.

Can’t wait for Van Nationals which are taking place in Southern Minnesota in 2020. Be there or be square.

The Last Cowboy in Telluride

Earlier this Spring we had the pleasure of visiting an old friend from his bike messenger days in Chicago, Mike Malone. Mike moved out of the city to Telluride, CO to work with his legendary “Uncle Roudy” on Roudy’s Ranch when he decided it was time for a major life shake up.

Roudy Roudebush is famously known as “the Last Cowboy in Telluride” and has been featured in Coors, Marlboro (yeah he was the flipping Marlboro Man!), Budweiser Adverts and was even featured in a Disney documentary about American life. And for those of you who grew up hanging around a ski shop, if you recall that classic Telluride poster where a cowboy on a horse horse is pulling a skier through a meadow with a peak in the background, that was Roudy too!

It was a real treat to meet him and hear some of his stories. As a lover of spaces and the things folks choose to surround themselves with it was a pleasure to get to see his barn and shoot some photos.

Quick story: You may notice that both Roudy and Mike wear Mickey Mouse watches. The reason, according to Roudy “it still tells the time, but it doesn’t piss you off so damn much.”

Vans of Utah Campout – Moab

Spring is the time of year to head to the desert, it’s green, not yet hot, and begging to be explored.

This past weekend Vans of Utah held an amazing van / chopper campout just North of Moab, Utah. We were lucky enough to be in the area and dropped in to meet the SLC crew. There was even a car show happening in the town.

It was a small affair but, to a person, the vibes were righteous and times were good. Saturday evening even held a lightning storm that lit up the sky and lent an air of disbelief that we were lucky enough to share these moments together.

It was a pleasure meeting you all. Your attitudes bode well for the future of the culture. I hope some of ya’ll come to Full Tilt Boogie Chopper and Van show in Minneapolis this Summer.

Full Tilt Boogie Chopper Show 2018 Photos

Full Tilt Boogie, the annual Minneapolis Chopper Show and Summer blowout organized by Heavy Clothing is always a good time.  This year’s edition took place on July 14th at local moto mainstay The Cabooze / Joint on the West Bank.

The event brings together folks from all over the Midwest chopper and Harley communities and is always a highlight of the Summer.

We were on hand to document some of our favorite bikes from the show.

Chariots of the Gods Custom Van Show – MPLS

Photographic evidence.

Chariots of the Gods Annual Custom Van Show has been stoking the flames of the vanning passion in both old timers and the younger generation for several years now. The highlight is the overnight campout and party. Taking place each August, this is one not be missed.

Folks put their heart and souls into building and maintaining these beauties.
